Near Lock App Reviews

The app works great, distances are reasonably estimated, do not expect to the inch accuracy, but within reason it functions nicely. The watch app can be finicky, but I blame Apple as all 3rd party watch apps are problematic.

I used a similar service in the past called MacID, and while it was pretty nice it was still early on in development so I decided to stop using it. Near Lock has worked seamlessly so far. Ive already been in contact with the developer, and theyve been very nice and responsive.

This app is very useful.

As a teacher that uses a Mac in the classroom to present PP and keynotes, many times I find myself having to return to my Mac to unlock it and trying that none of the students see me entering my pw or having to go up to my mac to put it to sleep so that no one could snoop around while I am away from my computer; this app has made my life in the classroom much easier and at the same time keeps my Mac safe from intruders. I also have it on my Apple watch and find it even easier and convenient to use on it. One click on my watch to wake up my Mac or to put it to sleep. The only one thing that concerns me is that it wakes up to quickly when I approach my Mac with my iphone not always wanting my Mac to wake up in that moment which I think might drain my battery to quickly. I think up to now it is an awesome app.

This is one of those apps that is a true utility. I love automation. Anything that reduces keystrokes or mouse movements/clicks, and this does just that. Its worth noting the iOS app seems to bounce around with the distance display but it seems to work flawlessly and as expected with my Mac. The developer is very responsive and dedicated to evolving this app. Well done.

This is most useful app I ever had!

Even though the exact distancing isnt perfect, Im all about cutting out passwords. Knowing that my computer will be safe even if I forget to lock it is another plus.

Ive used MacID for the past month, and Near Lock is 10 times better. Its faster and more reliable, and the settings are more intuitive.

The design in this app is great. When I first downloaded there was a slight hiccup in the lock screen. I contacted support and got a response from developer within 10 minutes. I just needed a simple reboot and all systems go. Really like the app on the watch also.

MacID works off and on. This works every time.

Not much else to say really, it does exactly what its supposed to and makes logging in and out a breeze.

I wasnt really sure if this app would work, but it really is great! It works just as advertised, and its quick too! Makes locking/unlocking my Mac super easy. Really no complaints at all with nearlock so far either, love the UI and the easiness!

I had seen previously-written negative reviews on this app, but saw that the most recent reviewers were quite happy, so I gave it a try and I’m really glad I did. Near Lock uses low-energy Bluetooth to automatically lock and unlock your Mac based on proximity to your iPhone. Keep in mind it’s not an actual OS lock, so any operations that were running in the background continue to do so when Near Lock has “locked” your screen. I’m very happy about this—it means I don’t have to reauthenticate 1Password every time I go to the bathroom or step away from my desk for 30 seconds. I used the free version for about a day before paying for the in-app purchase. The free version requires your iPhone to be unlocked and have the Near Lock app running in the foreground. It’s basically only good for making sure that Near Lock will work - I did that a dozen or so times, and when I was satisfied with the results I paid for the pro version. I have had two small issues. Today, my Macbook stopped locking. I contacted the developer and received a response within the hour. I needed to go into advanced settings and clear my Bluetooth cache, which required a system restart. After that it worked fine. The other issue is that if I’m sitting in a plush chair or couch with my iPhone in my pocket and my Macbook on my lap, the app will randomly lock and unlock the Macbook as the bluetooth signal strength is used to determine when the system locks. It’s annoying, but there’s really nothing the developer can do about this. If I take my phone out of my pocket I don’t get the issue. All in all, this is a great app, and totally worth the $4 I paid to avoid locking/unlocking my computer 20-30 times a day at work.

This is just perfect for work. I use it on two computers and no problems at all!
